The Revival Series bag from Boston Bag Co. is all around the best and most versatile tote bag we’ve encountered. Constructed of heavy 22oz canvas with hand-stitched leather grips, closure, and badge, and shoulder strap, double stitching throughout, brass rivets, and a waxed canvas bottom, these bags will stand the test of time even under heavy, prolonged use. Indeed, designer Marie Thompson, a recent MassArt graduate, based the Revival Series on Boston Bag’s original tote, an industrial product designed specifically for and sold exclusively to telephone and energy utilities for use on their maintenance trucks, where the bags were secured to the outside of the vehicle for year-round, rain-or-shine service. Yet the coolest part of the Revival Series is that they’re convertible: fold down the top section and handles, and the bag turns into a more compact duffle-style carryall, ideal for summer weekend travel, beach days and picnics. On the brand badge, you’ll notice the letters “TBW”, a vestige of Boston Bag’s parent company, Textile Buff & Wheel, which has been operating out of the same facility in Charlestown since 1928.
